Let’s face it – since the average wedding today has tons of out of town guests, you’re probably going to have a good number of guests who have no idea where they are going. Maps are about to become your guests’ best friend – and fortunately for them, you can add lots of maps to your wedding website. Previously, we’ve talked about how to create a fun “things to do and see” map for your wedsite, but today’s post is all about the step-by-step instructions for how to add a driving directions map to your Glösite. (Though these instructions are relevant for any website where you can paste in custom HTML code.) Here we go: 1) Make a Map Head on over to Google Maps and enter a destination or starting point in the location field 2) Get started with directions Roll over the section on the left and click on the “directions” link 3) Finalize directions Enter the starting point where guests will be coming from or to (depending on what you chose in step 1) – double check that your “from” and “to” locations are correct on the map. You can choose the mode of transportation: car, public transit, […]

Updated in March 2015 One of the most common questions I hear is “How do I add a Paypal button to my Glosite?” Many of you ask after seeing the incredible PayPal registry that Fenella and Stuart used on their wedding Glösite gift page. I’ve also seen Glö-bies use PayPal buttons to collect funds for events that are a part of their celebration, such as baseball games, cooking lessons, wine tours and the like. I love how creative you all are! So for those who are curious – here’s a quick tutorial on how to add a PayPal button to your website: PLEASE NOTE: The code on Paypal buttons is known to conflict with frames, which is what is used to play music on your Glösite. Apologies, but you will need to decide whether you would like to have music OR Paypal buttons on your site – they won’t work together. Step 1: Log into PayPal Step 2: On the left side of the page, click on Seller tools > Selling Preferences then click “get started” in the Paypal buttons section Step 3: Choose the type of button you’d like to add from the drop down menu. Step 4: Customize […]

One of my favorite features for the Glö wedding websites is that couples can add any widget they’d like to spice up their site. What the heck is a widget, you ask? Basically, it’s a short piece of pre-made code that allows you to add everything from a flight search, to a wedding countdown, to a map of things to see and do, or even a song request list to any of your Glösite pages. The best part is that you do not need to have any programming or technical knowledge to add widgets to your website. One of my favorite places to find widgets is on Widgetbox. It’s a site full of fun, FREE widgets that do a million different things. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to find a widget on Widgetbox and add to your Glösite: (1) Visit Widgetbox.com and click on the Widgets Tab (2) Choose “find widgets” Here you can browse by category, see what’s new and also search for widgets. Let’s do a search. Say you’re looking for a weather forecast for the place where your celebration will take place. Type in “weather forecast” or something similar in the search box (3) Scroll […]

I’ve written before about adding a Picasa slideshow to your Glö wedding website, but I know that lots of you also use flickr to store all of your fabulous photos. We don’t like anyone to feel left out, so here’s a similar tutorial on how to add a flickr slideshow to your Glösite. This “how to” will focus on adding a slideshow of a particular album I have on flickr, but the same principle applies to adding a slideshow of your photostream or an individual photo. 1) Go to your flickr account and on your photostream, set or album you’d like to add, click on an individual photo. 2) Click on the three dots in the bottom-right corner and choose “View Slideshow” from the pop-up menu 3) This takes you to a black page with your slideshow or photo in the middle. Click on “Share” in the top-right corner of this page 4) You can either select the code from the “Grab HTML code” box or else you can click on “customize HTML code” below to change the size of your slideshow 4b) If you click on “customize HTML code” make your selections (I like the medium size for Glösites) […]

UPDATE: Now that Picasa is linked to Google+, some of the features have changed slightly. The directions below are still valid if you work via the old Picasa web interface, which you can find but cutting and pasting the original link into your browser: https://picasaweb.google.com/home I’ve had a few questions lately about how to add a Picasa slideshow to one of your Glösite pages. In case others are wondering the same thing, here’s a quick video that should help. (for some reason, the video appears to go faster than the recording, but I hope it’s close enough to make sense!) To recap, the key steps are: 1) Ensure your album (or image) has the right visibility settings: Either Public or Visible to anyone with the link 2) grab the embed code from the lower-right side of the picasa page for that album or image 3) Paste the embed code onto your Glösite page – either into the widget box or using the “html” button of the text editor 4) Save your page, and view!

Your wedding website is a great way to build a connection with your guests, but what about when your guests want to connect with one another? As we say around Glö HQ – there’s a widget for that! In this case, the widget is a forum. A forum is a perfect way to facilitated conversations between guests who may not know one another, be friends on facebook, etc. It’s perfect for organizing rides from the airport, spare beds in hotel rooms, and other travel logistics. One forum provider who appears popular with Glö-bies is Nabble. With a few steps, you can get a forum up, running and embedded onto a page in your Glösite. Here’s a quick overview: 1) sign up for a Nabble (or another forum) account 2) Customize appearance, etc. 3) Grab the embed code 4) On your Glösite – choose a page where you’d like to add your forum. Click on the “html” button on the text editor and paste in the code, or paste the code in to the widget box at the bottom of the page. Save 5) Enjoy your forum!

We recently asked several Glöbies to fill out a survey to help us understand what you think about Glö and how we can improve. One comment I saw was a request for custom HTML on Glösite pages. The person didn’t leave their name, so I thought I’d just broadcast to everyone to let you know that this is possible! Using the HTML function, you can add photos, widgets, text, etc anywhere within the Glösite page. If the idea of HTML totally scares you, you can also continue to paste in widgets in the “widget box” – these will simply appear at the bottom of the page. Let’s go through a quick step-by-step using a PacMan widget that I found on Widgetbox (My total go-to source for fun widgets!) Go to ‘Manage Glövites’ > edit page and scroll down to the text box area. Here you’ll find a button labeled HTML. Click that bad-boy and another window will pop open. Now, flip over to the browser window with the widget you’re coveting and click ‘get widget’ A box will pop up with the code you need to capture, so click ‘copy’ Now, flip back to the browser window with glosite.com open […]

Say that title three times fast! I’m always looking for helpful ways to organize information like the countless widgets that are out there for wedding websites. The handy-dandy list maker from Pick.In totally caught my eye. I’m going to test it out by using it to track interesting widgets that I discover online. If you have found fun widgets that you’d like to share, please feel free to contribute! I sorta like the way Pick.In easily allows you to give widgets the thumbs up or down and to contribute to a running list. I’ve also been bookmarking sites on the GloWedding Delicious account. What do you think is better or easier to work with? I’m open for any and all suggestions to keep track of everything!

The Glö-Bride: Melissa, Educational consultant Her Glö-partner: Tim, Landscaper Celebration Date & Location: August 2010 in Melissa’s sister’s backyard in Junction City, Oregon/Lane County, USA Tell us how you got engaged: I have been friends with Tim’s sister for over 20 years. Tim and I recently met again after many years and sparks flew. He proposed over a picturesque bridge on bended knee, and I, of course, said yes. What’s the overall ‘feeling’ you’re aiming for with your celebration: We’re celebrating in my sister’s beautiful garden with many, many lush blooming plants. The overall “feeling” we’re going for is casual garden party. Are you adding any fun twists on tradition: We have wonderful cooks in the family, so we’re doing potluck. What was the inspiration behind your Glövite and Glösite design? How did you make it? My sister’s garden and her cats were the inspiration for the invitation and website.
