One of the first question your wedding guests will ask is “Where are you registered?” Most of our Glo-bies make their own registry page for their wedding website. However, we have a new wedding website registry page template available, just in case it makes life easier for you.

To find this feature, go to “Manage Glösite (your website)” or click the pink “View your Glösite” button to view your site as an admin. Then, scroll down to the list of pages, find the page that says “Registry (Registry),” and click the edit icon. In the section titled “Registry Information,”  you can add the name, link, and an image for each registry you would like to feature.

glosite wedding website registry page information

Once you’ve saved the page, we’ll then display each of your links directly on your Glosite wedding website registry page. You can see an example of a completed Glo registry page on Broen and Kristin’s Wedding Website.

On your registry page, you can link to any registries that you have set up. This might include physical stores, online stores, or even virtual cash registries. If the standardized registry listings won’t work for you, you can also use the text are of your registry page. This area is perfect if you want to add Paypal Registry Buttons or other information that you’d like to share.

Note: If you had previously created a registry page on your website before this feature was launched, we will still add this new Registry page to your account the next time you log in. However, this page will be turned off or “unpublished” on your site to prevent duplicate content. For all new Globies signing up for the first time, this page will be published along with your other pages.

Create a wedding website cash registry using Dwolla buttons

glosite add dwolla button to wedding website

Each week, we get a ton of questions about how to integrate a cash registry onto your Glö wedding website like Fenella and Stuart did on the Wedding Gifts page of their wedsite. Cash registries are fun because you can get as creative or simple as you’d like. Fenella and Stuart used Paypal buttons that allowed their guests to contribute cash gifts to different “funds,” such as:

  • Our Romance Fund: helping us keep that sparkle alive so we don’t get divorced …….and so you don’t have to come to yet another wedding….Dancing lessons, dinners out, theatre trips, first night honeymoon dinner, ‘Kiss ‘n’ Make Up’ treat after our first spat…
  • Our Home Fund: So when you come and stay you will have something to sleep on, something to wash with and the neighbours won’t see you naked through our curtainless windows….Bedding, towels, curtains, blinds, better cutlery (especially spoons!)…
  • Our Eco-Extension Fund: because we live in a cupboard, we need more space and once we build it, we’ll need to put stuff in it.…Dinning table and chairs, Sonos Sound System for online music streaming, speakers…
  • Create your own gift!: go on, surprise us! Describe your wishes in the comment box…

glosite add a cash registry to your wedding website

It’s easy to use Paypal buttons to add a registry to your wedding website, but we are all about options over here at Glo, so we wanted to send another suggestion your way: Dwolla.

Dowlla is an economical choice because (as of March 2015) they only take $.25 on each cash gift.

Note: The main hitch for Dwolla is that your guests will need to have or create a Dwolla account and add a bank account. Most bank accounts can be connected instantly via an online banking login and password, but some require a 1-2 day verification process.  If you’d like to give your guests the option to gift via credit card, you will need to use an alternate or additional service.

With Dwolla, you have the option to create three types of buttons:

  • “Simple Payment” – standard buttons that let your customers buy only one product or donate only one specific amount.
  • “Freetype Amount” – allows for a flexible amount depending on what your customer buys or what donation level the donor chooses to contribute.
  • “Pre-defined Amounts” – gives your customers a drop-down menu of product choices or donation options.

Sound good to you? Here’s how to get started.

  1. Create a Dwolla Account
  2. Create your button(s) using the Dwolla Button Generator, Dwolla has a great overview of how to create buttons in their FAQs. Or you can watch this handy video:
  3. After creating your button, copy the embed code for the button to your clipboard
  4. Login to your Glö account and navigate to “Manage Glösite (your website” > “Edit” for the page where you’d like the button to appear..
  5. Log into your Glo account and go to “Manage Glösite (your website)” > “Edit” for the page where you’d like for the button to appear. You can add the button to the bottom of the page by pasting the code into the widget box:

Note: The type of script that Dwolla buttons use will not work with the HTML feature on the text editor, but you can add text in the widget box above and below the Dwolla button code if you’d like. This is how Fenella and Stuart added their Paypal buttons with text in between.

That’s it! As the gifts come into your Dwolla account, you can connect your account to your bank account and transfer them.

Make Your Wedding Registry Website Fun for All

If you’re planning a wedding, I bet you’re looking for anything that lets you cut down on stress and save time.  Well here’s a tip!  With sites like Deposit a Gift and Glö, you can bring many aspects of planning a wedding, like the registry and invitations, into the modern era.  The pressure of family and tradition might give you pause, but there’s no reason that wedding websites and online registries can’t be pleasing to your family and friends – in the end they may even thank you for making their lives easier by keeping things online and at their fingertips anywhere in the world.

Here’s some guidance to make a modern wedding registry or website super fun for your friends and family:

  • Add a Personal Message: Guests want to know that they’re interacting with you, not some robot inside their computer.  Write a personalized note that welcomes them to your site and introduces them to the wishes of your modern wedding registry.

Example Registry

  • Customize It: Take advantage of all the options your have to personalize your pages.  Choose a site design, add pictures and import designs, videos, and widgets that express your personalities.

  • Update It With the Latest Info:  Keep your wedding registry and website up-to-date and let guests know if any plans have changed and how the planning process is going.  Use the e-mail function to send out messages to remind guests of your impending nuptials and how excited you are to see them!

Going paperless for your wedding might seem nontraditional at first, but you’ll likely find that the benefits of having an interactive site add a new dimension to the wedding day experience that you just don’t find when going the totally traditional route.

Years before Dana got married, she wondered how anyone could store so many presents—and even if they could, how they had the time to unwrap, return (often), track and use them all. Her marketing background led her to believe she could simplify the registry process—and not just for weddings, but for any big gifting event. And so Deposit a Gift, the next generation gift registry, was born. For more creative registry ideas, keep up with Deposit a Gift on Facebook, Twitter and their blog.

Q & Advice

No Sweat Registry Planning

No sweat resistry planningGravy boats, vases, chip’n dips, and herb mills, Oh My. What is on your registry?  Hold on a second, registering has slipped your mind? Do not fret soon enough someone will remind you when the person insists “You should have done this by now!” Registering can be very fun and equally stressful.  Maybe you are like me when I was planning my wedding: working full-time, planning a cross-country move, feel you have everything that you need, and the idea of heading to a department store for a whole day with salespeople that want to tell you what you need. If this sounds about right then keep reading to learn about how we made it through.

Let’s start by getting something out of the way right away. Like many couples, my partner and I lived together before we were married. During this time we definitely accumulated things together and combined both of our belongings. Sure, we loved sprucing up our place but we felt funny asking for gifts. Maybe that is weird but that is how we felt. Here is a secret: people are going to buy you things even if you do not register. If you register, chances are they will buy you something that you like. Sometimes people just give you things that you never would have picked but the truth is people want to buy you things. They really do. So do not make them try and guess what you would like. Register.

Okay, now that we have that part out of the way onto how to keep it fun. First, talk with your partner. Unless your love is completely uninterested (and that is fine with you) both of you may have interesting ideas. Once you are both on the same page about what you would like then you can focus your energy. Have you thought about doing all of your registering online?

Did you know that you could register for various components of your honeymoon? People can actually put money towards your flight, a bottle of champagne for your room, or purchase a romantic dinner at a local restaurant in your destination. A pal and his wife did this when they were headed to Sicily. It can be fun and a great way to add activities to your plan.   All of this can be done online but many travel agents have information too. Check out these sources for more information:

What if you and your darling like spending your time skiing or playing tennis? Plenty of sporting goods stores allow you to register, you can even register for a gift card. This may require you to visit a store and know exactly what you would like first. But you may not need to do the actual registering in-person. You are just going to want to try on the boots or feel weight of the racket, naturally.  Personally, I think this is a great idea. We don’t really have mutual sporting interests but I think the idea of contributing to the passions of a beloved pal and their partner sounds great. If gardening or bird watching is more your things, why not draft an email to anyone that asks what you would like with the specific items you want? Or go ahead and register for almost ANYTHING on Amazon. The only danger of this option is that if you are not extremely specific, people may feel overwhelmed and pick out something that you are not interested in. Just be clear. Here are some sites that allow you to register:

http://www.amazon.com/

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/giftCertificates/

http://www.homedepot.com/

My man and I registered for “traditional” items on line. We love to cook and were ready to have some decent home goods so here is how we made the process work for us.

First, we made a list every time we noticed something in our home was either getting worn out or we were tired of “making due” with something else. Then one cold winter day, we sat down with our computers at our favorite coffee shop.  We took the list with us and searched for the items. When we came to an agreement (or compromised, I am a design snob) we registered for them. During this process we found other items that “would be nice to have.” Still other items one of us would check out in person, but that truthfully only happened once. The beauty of vendor sites is that you can add and remove as you please.  We started with our basics and added as we saw things in person.  For us this was really fun.

You will find a system that works for you. Do not be afraid to say “No,” to items that you know you really do not want. Many well-intentioned people may insist that you “need” to register for a gravy boat but if you are a vegan who does not eat gravy, it is okay to pass. It goes for the chip’n dip, too.

Register Your Way: A Great Alternative to Traditional Wedding Registries

When it comes to asking for money as a wedding gift, I’m betting even Dear Abby finds herself scratching her head and wondering what the most polite approach is. Of course, it’s something that every couple dreams of asking for; afterall, what could be better than the hassle-free reality that is cold, hard cash? But, why then, do so many newlyweds instead find themselves knee deep in wedding gifts that they’ll spend the first year of their married life returning?

The answer is obvious: asking for anything out-of-the-ordinary (especially money!) is a sensitive thing. When my husband and I were planning our wedding, we really truly didn’t need anything….except help with our home renovation.

We dreamed about creating a registry asking for money to pay for items like, “landscape lights” and “a kitchen sink.” But, we couldn’t figure out how to create that type of a registry in a tactful way and instead ended up registering for a handful of things at the usual places just for the sake of having a registry. And, of course, we were lavished with some really bizarre gifts that are now collecting dust in the “regift” pile in our basement.

Oh, if only we had known about Deposit a Gift. An easy and classy way to ask your friends and family to help you pay for things you really want or need. The approach is to be specific in what you’re going to do with the money people are gifting instead of just asking for it. On the Deposit a Gift website, you’re able to insert customized items – ranging from honeymoon extravagances to charity donations to (would have been helpful in my case) home renovation items. For example:

The gifter feels good about donating to the causes because they know exactly where their money is going, and that it’s what you truly want/need.

Here’s founder Dana Ostomel’s two-cents:

Everyone is asking what you want for your wedding and where you’re registered. If you prefer money towards specific goals and dreams, how do you communicate this in a polite and tactful way? You certainly don’t want to offend your guests, but you also don’t want them wasting their money on gifts you can’t use or will return.

A cash wedding registry is the perfect solution to create a gift list of exactly what you need! It’s attractive to you, but will it be appealing to guests? I say, it’s all in the positioning. As with any gift, givers want to feel good about it and connected to their choice. Here are a few tips for smooth sailing…

How To Create a Cash Wedding Registry Guests Will Love:

Choose a Narrative: This type of registry is an awesome opportunity to share with your guests what is important to you at this time in your life. What’s your story?

  • Got grandiose travel plans? Create a Honeymoon Registry.
  • Is your eye on the prize of home-ownership? A Home Down payment Registry is perfect for you.
  • Want your honeymoon to last a year? Register for a year’s worth of Newlywed Activities.
  • Feeling generous? Donations to your favorite Charities are perfect.

Everyone Likes Options: Admit it. When you give a gift, you want to give something that you like and feel connected to. The same is true for your guests. So create a registry with choices that will appeal to all kinds of people:

  • A range of price points
  • Various gifts from the practical to the whimsical

Gifts That Feel Like Gifts: If I’ve learned anything at all, it’s about the psychology of gift-giving. People want to give you something special that you’ll cherish and always remember them for.

  • Dinner at a swanky restaurant or contributions to your new flat screen TV are swell, paying back your credit card debt or supplementing your electric bill for a year, not so much. Think like a gift-giver!

Be Authentic: Don’t be afraid to really put your personality into it. The more your registry feels like a reflection of you, the more fun it will be for guests and the more likely they are to use this registry. So pop your favorite wine one night, curl up together and have some fun!

  • If you two love ice cream, then create a gift of 7 days worth of ice cream on your honeymoon – a new flavor every day!
  • If your fiancé is a beer fanatic, but you’re clueless, how about a membership to the beer of the month club and home-brewing classes for the two of you?

Be Gracious: Set the stage for your registry with a personal and gracious note at the top (something you can’t do with a department store gift list) to give context to your registry and why it will be so meaningful and memorable to you. Though gifts are not expected, they are common, and it never hurts to show a little advanced appreciation.

Here’s an example of what you could say:

Thank you so much for joining us and being a part of all the joy, love and festivities! Many of you have generously asked if there’s anything we’d like as we brave new worlds, and the truth is, we’ve got most everything we need when it comes to traditional household things. What would be most memorable for us you actually can’t register for at a regular store, so we’ve created this registry that is designed to let others make partial purchases to contribute towards those very adventures we’re embarking on: a honeymoon wine country road trip, some classes to continue learning about our love of wine and food and some weekend getaways to rejuvenate from our crazy work schedules!

If you feel so inclined to help make it happen, we would be most appreciative and look forward to sharing the memories and pictures with you. Of course, the best present is having you along to share our excitement. We can’t wait to celebrate with you and are so grateful to have you in our lives!

Much love, Jennifer and Tom

So there you have it, folks; a tactful way to ask for what you really want. Thanks for sharing, Dana!

I’d love to hear fun things you’ve asked for you in your registry or hope to ask for.
