One of the first question your wedding guests will ask is “Where are you registered?” Most of our Glo-bies make their own registry page for their wedding website. However, we have a new wedding website registry page template available, just in case it makes life easier for you.

To find this feature, go to “Manage Glösite (your website)” or click the pink “View your Glösite” button to view your site as an admin. Then, scroll down to the list of pages, find the page that says “Registry (Registry),” and click the edit icon. In the section titled “Registry Information,”  you can add the name, link, and an image for each registry you would like to feature.

glosite wedding website registry page information

Once you’ve saved the page, we’ll then display each of your links directly on your Glosite wedding website registry page. You can see an example of a completed Glo registry page on Broen and Kristin’s Wedding Website.

wedding website registry page

On your registry page, you can link to any registries that you have set up. This might include physical stores, online stores, or even virtual cash registries. If the standardized registry listings won’t work for you, you can also use the text are of your registry page. This area is perfect if you want to add Paypal Registry Buttons or other information that you’d like to share.

Note: If you had previously created a registry page on your website before this feature was launched, we will still add this new Registry page to your account the next time you log in. However, this page will be turned off or “unpublished” on your site to prevent duplicate content. For all new Globies signing up for the first time, this page will be published along with your other pages.

how to easily collect wedding guests mailing addresses and emails glosite

Above: Letterpress envelopes by Riding Type

We are excited to share two new features that we’ve rolled out for your Glo Wedding Website. These features are intended to make your life easier, while giving guests the ability to edit their own information in your guestbook. Result? You have more time to spend on the fun stuff instead of the boring admin stuff. Both of these features are optional, but we hope you’ll find the useful.

New Feature: Guests can add or edit mailing addresses

Very few of us have friends’ and family’s snail mail addresses on hand. So when it comes time to send paper wedding invitations or thank you notes, things get tricky. At Glo, we’ve just rolled out a feature that allows a guest to provide or update the snail mail address for their entire household. The new information is saved directly into your address book for all guests in the household. The feature works like this:

1) You enable this feature in “Manage Glösite” > edit “RSVP” page > check off feature allowing guests to edit their mailing address. (Note: you can customize the text on the button)

1a add edit mailing address feature glosite

2) On the RSVP page of your Glosite wedding website, guests are prompted to provide their mailing address

1b guests click to edit mailing address

3) The mailing address information is edited and saved into your guestbook for all guests in the Household

1c guest updates mailing address

New Feature: Guests can edit the names and email addresses of all the guests in their household

Are you in the situation where you don’t know the name of a +1 your guest is bringing? Or you don’t know the email addresses for a friend’s significant other? Now, your guests can provide this information for you. Here is how the feature works:

1) Enable the “edit names” feature in “Manage Glösite” > edit “RSVP” page > check off feature allowing guests to edit their names. (Note: you can customize the text on the button)

2a add edit names emails feature glosite

2) On the RSVP page of your Glosite wedding website, guests are prompted to update the names and email addresses for everyone in their Household

2b guests click to edit names and emails

3) The updated name and email information is saved into your guestbook

2c guest updates names and emails

How to Add a Google Map to Your Wedding Website

Glosite how to add a google map wedding website

Let’s face it – since the average wedding today has tons of out of town guests, you’re probably going to have a good number of guests who have no idea where they are going. Maps are about to become your guests’ best friend – and fortunately for them, you can add lots of maps to your wedding website. Previously, we’ve talked about how to create a fun “things to do and see” map for your wedsite, but today’s post is all about the step-by-step instructions for how to add a driving directions map to your Glösite. (Though these instructions are relevant for any website where you can paste in custom HTML code.)

Here we go:

1) Make a Map

Head on over to Google Maps and enter a destination or starting point in the location field

1 - google maps glosite wedding website

2) Get started with directions

Roll over the section on the left and click on the “directions” link

2 - directions google map glosite wedding website

3) Finalize directions

Enter the starting point where guests will be coming from or to (depending on what you chose in step 1) – double check that your “from” and “to” locations are correct on the map.  You can choose the mode of transportation: car, public transit, walking, etc. at the top. If the results show multiple ways to get from point A to point B, choose the one you prefer guests to use by clicking on the blue or grey path on the map or the choices listed below the to/from details.

3 - destination google map glosite wedding website

4) Click the Maps Menu

In the top, left of the page, click on the menu icon (the one that looks like a hamburger with several vertical lines.) This opens the menu

4 - destination google map glosite wedding website

5) Create an embedable map

On the menu, click “Share or embed map”

5 - embed google map glosite wedding website

6) Format map and copy code to clipboard

Click on the “Embed map” tab – on this tab you can choose the size of map you’d like to embed. Then highlight and copy (control-X) the embed code to your clipboard

6 - customize google map glosite wedding website

7) Add the map to your Glö Wedding Website (your glosite)

Head on over to your glosite.com account. Navigate to the page where you would like to embed the map. When you are editing the page, you have two options for pasting in the code. The first is pasting it into the Widget Box – this will place the map at the bottom of the page. The second option is to click the HTML button on the text editor – this will allow you to paste the code directly into the text area on the page and the map can appear anywhere (e.g., before or after other text, photos, etc. on the page.)

(Hint: you can also embed the map in an Event description using the HTML button on the event description text editor.)

7 add map to glosite wedding website

8) Preview your map on your Glö wedding website

View your Glosite wedding website, navigate to the page where you’ve just added the map and there it is!

Celebration Date & Location:

April 12, 2014
Greensboro, NC
Our church, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro

Tell us how you got engaged:

No specific engagement story, we just knew over time we would be together. We initially exchanged rings in February 2012, while we were still living apart but committed to being together. By the fall we were finally able to live together, by the next spring we decided to go ahead and plan our wedding. We really wanted our friends and family to be there and didn’t want to keep waiting!

What’s the overall ‘feeling’ you’re aiming for with your celebration:

The overall feeling of the day was guided by the invitation from e.m. papers “Love Joy Happiness.” Everything was filtered through this lens: does it bring us love joy happiness? If yes, it’s in, if no it’s out. We had food that we loved and we knew our guests would love, we wore clothes we loved and looked smashing in, we hosted an open house the night before so our out of towners could meet our Wedding Team and already have friends at the wedding. Our choir was a big part of the wedding, both at the beginning and at the end. We included both a serious and silly reading. The whole event was incredibly joyous. Many people told us it was the most joyful wedding they’ve ever attended.

Are you adding any fun twists on tradition:

Instead of a bridal party we had a Wedding Team. We asked a couple friend of ours to be the captains about six months out then had a Wedding Team lunch two months out so people could understand the logistics and flow of the wedding. Instead of a ring bearer, we asked a child that my partner teaches in the Religious Education program to bring us the rings at the appropriate time. This way he could sit with his family and go sit back down with them.

What was the inspiration for your Glövite and Glösite design? If you made them yourself, tell us how you did it.

The design was definitely the theme of the wedding. We picked out the invitation design probably two years before we started planning. It was always our focus: Love Joy Happiness. E.m. papers designed a poster for us for people to sign and we had it hanging in our kitchen long before our wedding. On our glosite wedding website we worked to make everything as simple and user friendly as possible. We worked to make sure everyone felt welcome, beginning with our website.

Any good planning tips and tricks for the couples who are just starting to plan?

Plan in advance as much as possible. Create a timeline and stick to deadlines. You will have much less stress in the time leading up to your wedding. Get as much done in advance as you can! I am a HUGE fan of A Practical Wedding and OffBeat Bride. Both have great spreadsheets that I highly recommend. Yes, spreadsheets. Use them! The only thing I wish I had done differently was tell a couple of groups of folks that I wanted pictures with them. Some people left before we could do this. Don’t make this mistake! Most of all have fun!

Wedding 20140412-1455

Wedding 20140412-1745

What’s the biggest “say what?”  moment or funny story that’s happened since you started planning?

Our wedding clothes were custom made. To create the design for my now wife’s vest, we went all over town trying to find something that fit her right so we could tell our seamstress about it. Then we bought the reflective vest from IKEA for her to use when she goes out running in the morning. She came back from her run and said “This is the right design! Use this!” So we took the measurements from the reflective vest and sent it off to our seamstress. It was perfect.

There were the moments of frustration with people not rsvp’ing correctly or saying insensitive things like “I just can’t commit that far (two months!) out.” Whatever. Everything will work out.

Q & Advice

Ultimate Checklist: What To Include On Your Wedding Website

glosite what to include on wedding website

Bonus: DOWNLOADABLE WHAT TO INCLUDE ON YOUR WEDDING WEBSITE CHEAT SHEET

It’s been awhile since we addressed the question of what information to include on your wedding website. As you might imagine, weddings have changed in the past few years. Some celebrations now have their own hashtags, Instagram feeds, or even live streaming addresses.

Since every couple (and every wedding) is different, creating an end-all, be-all list of what to put on a wedding website isn’t our goal.  Instead, we want to set you up for success and empower you to create a wedding website that meets all of your goals and helps make your wedding planning even more fun!

Before you panic, remember that your website is dynamic! Think about what details your guests will need when and add this info bit by bit. The information listed online when you send your save the dates may be drastically different than. when you send your invitations or wedding reminder emails.

Glosite Wedding Website What to Include Checklist

What to include on a wedding website in 2015:

Salutations! Hello! Greetings!:
You’re pumped! It’s your wedding! You’re so excited and you just can’t hide it. And your guests should be, too. After all, it’s one of the biggest days of your life. You want everyone there, in one place, celebrating. Start out with excitement!

What, where and when:
First thing’s first: date(s) and location(s). You’ve hemmed and hawed over these two things for months, maybe even years! And for good reason. They’re important. Put these details —where is it and when is it — front and center and avoid getting multiple emails from your adorable, but confused, Aunt Gertie.

The Events & Schedule:
Are we running a marathon or going out with a bang? Will the events be spread over several days or will it be a simple classic ceremony and reception? Give your guests plenty of time to arrange for time off of work and make travel arrangements to they can attend all of your events. (If you’re hosting multiple events and not all of your guests are invited to all of the events – i.e., rehearsal dinner or GIRLS NIGHT – be sure your wedding website has a feature to only show the correct events to each guest and prevent any hurt feelings. HINT: Glo offers this feature…)

Travel Information to the Venue(s):
Sure, everyone has GPS on their smart phones now. But having an interactive map helps guests with their planning. Some folks (ahem, Nana and Great Aunt Linda) might prefer precise printable paper directions. They need to know where to park, how to reach the various venues, and, if you’re in a city, public transportation instructions are always helpful!

Travel Info for Out of Town Guests:
Whether your guests are traveling across town, across state, or coming from another country, travel info is key! Think about what you’d need to know in order to plan a trip and provide this for your guests so that they don’t need to do the legwork: Accommodation options (and any negotiated discounts); Convenient airports or train stations; Driving directions or public transportation options from the airport to your wedding location; A special wedding code for discounted Uber or Lyft rides, especially if it’s a big wedding or in an urban location.

ALSO! If you have guests coming from overseas, it is helpful to provide information about regional airlines or car rental companies, as these may differ from country to country.

Downloadable ‘Travel Pack’:
This one is fun. It’s a handy-dandy document that guests can download and bring with them. It’s packed full of all the details they will need when they’re not sitting in front of a computer (driving directions, hotel and venue addresses, your phone number, etc.) Guests can choose to print this out, or, in the age of mobile, simply download it to their phones or tablet. You can also include the hard copy of this in their “welcome bags.”

Online RSVPs:
Guests love the convenience of being able to submit all of their RSVP information online, and you have much better things to do with your time than collecting and recording these things by hand! What is this? The 90s?

Contact Information:
Let your guests know how to reach you if they have questions or just want to send their love and congratulations! (Just be sure this is cloaked via a contact form or kept private on a password protected page!) Options include: Phone number, Face time details, Google voice, Skype, Email address, Twitter handle, WhatsApp or whatever you check most often. Include your physical address (if you think your guests will want to send boxed gifts)

Dress code: Everyone always wonders what to wear to a wedding.  Keep your guests from stressing by clarifying whether they need to dust off that suit, tux, cocktail dress, or find their best “beach chic” ensemble. Everyone will thank you when it comes time to pack!

FAQ’s:
This is a spot for “all the rest.” Common questions that guests might have include: Whether babysitting services are available and if children are invited (since some guests don’t know the ins and outs of envelope etiquette. Will you will provide transportation to/from the celebration? What is the significance of a particular event or element of your wedding if they are culturally related. Think about all the questions you ask when you go to other people’s weddings and try to include the answers to make life easier for your guests!

Optional items to include on your wedding website:

Photos:
Some prefer to go simple, others like to splash out with photos. You can get creative here by sharing some baby photos or maybe photos of important moments you and your partner have had together. Photos are a great way of bringing some personality to your site, but try not to go overboard – nobody likes a shrine!

Wedding Hashtag or Photo sharing app:
To collect all of the photos and comments leading up to and during the big day(s) – plus this allows invited guests who can’t attend to follow along from afar.

Information about you:
It can be fun (and helpful) to provide a bit of information about how you met and who you are as people, especially for far-flung family members and those who haven’t been following your every move on Instagram. We’re talking fun facts and interesting tidbits here, not a full resume!

The lowdown on your family, attendants or other wedding VIPs:
Since these people will likely be front and center during your celebration (and presumably are important people in your lives) it’s great to provide a bit of a who’s who for guests who may not know your friends and family as well as you do.

Registry details:
Hooray, presents! While including this on your actual invitations is usually poo-pooed by the etiquette queens, it’s more widely accepted to include information about and links to your registry on your website. You’re all smart brides and grooms – you know how to do this tastefully.

Above all, keep in mind that your website will help set the tone for your highly personalized and fun wedding celebration – so don’t be afraid to add some personality and pizazz along with the vital information. Carefully chosen photos, fun widgets, and the right tone of voice are real crowd pleasers.

Scott, aerospace engineer (awesome ice hockey player)

Tell us how you got engaged:

We dated for 5.5 years before getting engaged. We met while finishing up our last quarter of college. We had both already secured jobs before meeting, one job in northern CA, one in southern CA. So, after a couple years of long distance dating, we moved in together. Scott proposed to me in the town where we met, after recreating our first 3 dates (Starbucks, frozen yogurt, pizza and wine at a beautiful lookout). And I said yes!

What’s the overall ‘feeling’ you’re aiming for with your celebration:

We just wanted the people we love and who love us most to be there for the wedding. We tried very hard to only invite people we both know. We ended up inviting a few people who only one of us knew and giving a “plus one” to a single friend, but it was so wonderful to look out at our guests during the ceremony and see so many people we love gathered in one place.

dinner settings

We knew we wanted to get married outside, and once we picked Northstar. Scott was obsessed with the idea of getting married up on the mountain. So we and our guests took two gondolas up to the ceremony site! It was really fun and different and the view was amazing!

groomsmen on gondola

Other than those two things, we really didn’t have any “must haves.” I just wanted pretty flowers, so I told our florist the bridesmaids would be in navy blue and let her do her thing. Having a traditional wedding cake wasn’t a big priority, so we bought several cakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes and Scott’s aunt and uncle picked them up for us. They were so good, the guests were raving about the cake!

Are you adding any fun twists on tradition:

We skipped both the bouquet toss and garter toss (although I did wear my grandma’s garter!).
I had my brother walk me to the end of the aisle and Scott met me there. I walked the rest of the way down the aisle with Scott.
My aunt made Scott’s tie out of a dress shirt!
We made s’mores at the fire pit at the reception site! YUM.

What was the inspiration for your Glövite and Glösite design? If you made them yourself, tell us how you did it.

I just thought the design was cute! Simple, pretty colors. It didn’t “match” our wedding, but I didn’t care about that!

Any good planning tips and tricks for the couples who are just starting to plan?

I loved Glosite! It was really fun to see that people had opened the invitations five minutes after we sent them! And super easy to use, too.
I love the blog A Practical Wedding, and recommend it to anyone I know who is engaged! Helps keep the sanity :)

What’s the biggest “say what?”  moment or funny story that’s happened since you started planning?

You may be wondering why we are all wearing sunglasses during the ceremony. It’s not (only) because we are super cool people. It’s because when Scott and I were taking pictures an hour before the ceremony, a big gust of wind blew something into my eye. It would not come out! We called the mountain patrol guys in to help and my aunt, a nurse, tried to help too. But whatever was in my eye, was IN MY EYE like a splinter. I couldn’t open my eye at all for awhile! I think my aunt got a piece of it to break off with a q-tip, because eventually I was able to open my eye as long as I kept my gaze down. The wind and sun outside were going to be too much for my poor eye but I figured I could just wear my sunglasses. I told the wedding party to get their sunglasses on (so I wouldn’t be the only one wearing them) and we powered through the ceremony. Even our ring bearer sported shades!

ring bearer

My eye splinter came out on its own after the ceremony and I had a blast at the reception, even though my eye was a little wonky. During the whole eye splinter debacle everyone kept commenting on how great it was that I was so calm. I wish I had been more upset because crying would have probably flushed my eye out!

This was the ONLY crazy thing that happened the entire wedding/planning process. No family drama, no bridesmaid drama, nothing. So I think we were due for some sort of mishap!

What is your favorite memory from your celebration?

Favorite memories:

My family made a tunnel for us to run through as we entered the reception! That was really fun.

tunnel
I just remember feeling really emotional as I walked down the aisle with Scott, knowing how important this moment was going to be for us. I was so worried I would cry through the ceremony, but after a couple minutes I was fine!

I had so much fun dancing at the reception! I had no idea we had so many dancers in our families!

Huffington Post - 7 Widgets for a Guest Friendly Wedding Website

I have to confess, not being a born writer – doing something like this on such a main-stream media outlet felt rather scary at first….but now I am feeling pretty tickled to have it out there in cyberspace!

If you enjoy the post – I’d love for you to comment on, like or tweet it! The best part of my job is all of the interaction I get to have with awesome Glöbies like you.

Gisela and Alena’s Celebration of Love (one of the first gay weddings at city hall in NYC!!!)

I can’t even explain how privileged I feel to introduce our next Real Glöbie couple, who were among the first gay couples to be married at City Hall in New York City on July 24, 2011.

Tell us how you got engaged:

In April of 2010 while in Miami (we love Miami) I made a custom scratch off card for Alena with the question: Will you Marry Me? Alena started laughing…I was like I am serious! She said yes…we partied like rock stars!

Wedding Ceremony

What’s the overall ‘feeling’ you’re aiming for with your celebration:

We wanted an intimate Celebration of Love – that was catered to us. We were not concerned with having the fanciest venue and dresses – but more concerned with how we could be creative and FUN.

postwedding

Are you adding any fun twists on tradition:

Alena and I baked 150 cupcakes the night before our party, had a stepNrepeat backdrop made, custom m&ms, pens, a slideshow and even a specialty drink menu. We designed a “Celebration of Love: logo and it was EVERYWHERE!

celebration of love

What was the inspiration for your Glövite and Glösite design? If you made them yourself, tell us how you did it.

Nothing to fancy. We wanted it to be sweet and informative – with a tease for what our guests could expect the night of the party. I used photos from the day of our ceremony in New York, combined that with some cool text and VOILA!

Any good planning tips and tricks for the couples who are just starting to plan?

When you are planning your party remember that you will never be able to please everyone. There will be people that can’t make it on a specific date. The party is about YOU. And you don’t need to go broke to prove to everyone that you are in love.

party

What’s the biggest “say what?”  moment or funny story that’s happened since you started planning?

About an hour before our party Alena had a true bridezilla moment about us not being ready…she went to run up the stairs and tumbled UP the staircase! Luckily she didn’t break her neck.
